After a strong performance in the final day’s endurance event, Delft took the Class 1A prize. Paul van Tricht, Team Leader of DUT Racing, said: “We’ve sacrificed an entire year for this car, with 60 people working through the night to get this result, so it feels absolutely fantastic. It was a real surprise that we performed so well against the petrol cars as well. Now we have to make sure we win again next year!” Going into the final day’s gruelling 22km endurance event there was a four way tussle for the Class 1 lead between Bath, GFR, Munich and Stuttgart. Whoever claimed the fastest time and fuel economy during the endurance would come out on top.
Bath faced the real prospect of becoming the first ever UK team to win Formula Student, with a nimble, quick car and, importantly, the most experienced driver at the event. Jason Linden-Tahincioglu had raced Lewis Hamilton in GP2 before an injury forced him to go back to his studies.

With the sun beating down on the Silverstone track, Stuttgart were the first of the front runners out, laying down an impressive time of just under 27 minutes which took them to the top of the leaderboard. However, just as their car finished its final lap and with the other leading cars poised to take to the track, the heavens opened.
Monsoon rains left Silverstone better resembling a river than a track. Waiting to go on, a Bath team member tweeted: “It’s pouring here at Silverstone. Congrats Stuttgart.” Stuttgart took the endurance and the Class 1 overall prize after showing amazing consistency throughout the four days – they were in the Top 10 for every event apart from cost, where they came 13th. With the victory they became the joint most successful team in Formula Student’s 14 year history, with their three wins equalling the University of Toronto’s previous record. Second place went to last year’s winners, TU Munich, while a second place performance in the
endurance saw the University of Hertfordshire snatch third overall – their best ever result.
Peter Leipold, 26, Chief Executive of Rennteam Stuttgart, said: “It’s such a great feeling to win Formula Student. It’s taken a lot of hard work from a lot of people over the past year, we’ve had to deal with so many problems throughout the competition but it’s all been worth it.
“Formula Student gives you the chance to learn much more than you ever could through studying, internships and diplomas. You have to deal with ideas and concepts, design, manufacturing, costing, materials, testing, logistics – there’s such a huge range of work you have to do. I don’t think there’s any other competition in the world in which you can learn so much.” See all the Formula Student results and awards on the Formula Student website.
