World-class engineering,
award-winning design and some good old-fashioned British weather helped the University of Stuttgart take the Formula Student 2011 title at Silverstone last

month.
The German team’s win capped off four days of intense competition at the world-famous Northamptonshire circuit. Over 2,300 students in 125 teams from 34 countries entered this year, making Formula Student the world’s largest student motorsport competition.
The teams had been given one challenge – to design and build single seat race car in one year before testing them over four days at Silverstone. The cars were judged on their speed, acceleration, handling and endurance, while the teams were tested on their design, costing and business presentation skills. Often counting towards engineering
students’ degree, Formula Student acts as a kite mark of engineering excellence on any graduate’s CV, as Chairman Jon Hilton explains: “There is a growing realisation that competing in Formula Student is a great thing to have on your CV if you want to pursue a career in engineering, not just motorsport. The list of Formula Student sponsors shows you that it isn’t only motorsport people who are coming to try to find the very best graduate people to join their businesses. There are companies such as Jaguar Land Rover and Airbus UK as well as the Formula One teams. We have some heavy hitters in industry and that is true of all the other Formula Student competitions across Europe.”
