DE-MYSTIFYING CAREER
CHALLENGES Electronic publisher provides innovative online career guidance
Many people come to the end of their education with a good knowledge of academic subjects. However core business topics may still be forbidding, unfamiliar, territory. Few people can sensibly take the plunge into the world of work without at least a basic grasp of how business works, or accountancy, law, marketing and human resources.
Quicklook Books publish short ‘Know the Basics’ guides to these subjects. Former lawyer Peter McGarrick (63) the CEO and founder of Quicklook Books Limited, points out that there is an astonishing lack of very short books in any medium.
He says: “For those who want a basic grasp of something, almost all books are too long. The aim of the Quicklook series is to deliver everything that you need to know to get a feel for a subject in a 90
30
minute read.
“This is done by avoiding jargon and sticking to the most important and interesting points – it is amazing what you can achieve when you cut out the waffle,” he explains. “Huge subjects like medicine, law and accountancy are covered in about 70 pages each.
“There seems to be a noticeable gap in the market for quick and simple guides to broad subjects that retain the factual accuracy and writing standard of text books,” said McGarrick. “You can get snippets of information from Wikipedia and you can buy text books from any bookstore, but there is very little middle ground for people who want a broad-brush guide that can form a good base for further learning”.
Quicklook’s books are available in eBook format from the website at
www.quicklookbooks.com . Unlike almost all so-called eBooks, which are simply scanned in conventional books, they have been written, from the outset, with on screen reading in mind. McGarrick is convinced that eBooks are as different from ordinary books as TV is from film. They need to be short, to the point and sensibly split into readable sections via proper headings. As a result he reckons that any intelligent reader will “know the basics” of a subject covered by a Quicklook book in a read of about 90 minutes.
Priced at £2.99, the books are well within the budget of almost all job seekers.
