“Tourism is a fast moving arena so we need to be alert to changes,” he says.

“I decided to study the MBA - a Masters in Business Administration - as it connects theory to practice and immediately gets you putting the practice in your own business,” Chris says.

He chose the Executive MBA at Lancaster University Management School (LUMS) as he felt he would have the chance to “tap into brilliant minds”.

“When I was looking at MBA courses, I started with the desire to go to a top institution, and I narrowed down my shortlist to a few select business schools. I also looked at the research ratings as that is a great indicator of the quality of minds within the business school that will be teaching you.”

Now one year in to the two year part time programme, Chris has adapted to fitting the assignments around his business, through evening study and by taking a week off every two months for the on-campus lectures and seminars that start each module of the course.

Te investment in his own personal development, as well as the development of new strategies to grow the business, are paying off and the MBA is exceeding his expectations:

“Te intensive weeks at the management school give a fantastic overview of each subject area, and we’ve had some impressive, world renowned experts come to speak to us. Te assignments have been hard, but rewarding - each project is focussed on an area of my business so it’s actually a great form of internal consultancy,” he says.

“I’ve produced some incredibly valuable work and it has been brought about by a depth of study and knowledge that I’d never have thought possible.”

Chris has found LUMS to be an inspiring and supportive environment for himself and his fellow students: “I’d say it’s a place where you can set your own direction and find every kind of support you need along the way,” he says. “If entrepreneurship is your driving interest, you’ll find some of the finest minds in the country waiting to help you shape your ideas. But that’s not for everyone - each person needs different things from an MBA and therein lies Lancaster’s true strength. Tey are not prescriptive about what you need, they provide a foundation of

ideas then do all they can to help you find the answers you need for your studies, your work and your future.”

For Chris, studying at LUMS has invigorated his plans for the future of Cycle Active and developed him as a more effective and insightful business leader.

“Te MBA is giving me great ideas and helping me build a model of how things need to develop. We’re working on ideas now that will shape our future for the next five years, but the real changes will start next year, once I complete my MBA,” he says.

“It’s a tremendously exciting time.” www.cycleactive.co.uk
