Teacher Jazz CPD Workshop Tour As I write this we’re now in the thick of final preparations for the 2011 teacher improvisation workshops. Aimed at teachers who are fairly new to jazz and improvising, this is a national one-day workshop which will visit towns across the UK.

For the October 2011 dates jazz flautist and

sax player Geoff Warren (a close collaborator with Graham Collier in the eighties and former professor of jazz flute at the Royal Academy of Music) joins Richard Michael, our lead educator, for the dates in the north of the UK. Geoff, a very experienced leader of jazz masterclasses and workshops, is now resident in Italy so we’re all very excited to work with him back in the UK! Dates with Geoff Warren and Richard Michael are: Thu 27 October: Bolton; Fri 28 October: Carlisle. For the three November workshop dates we are delighted to welcome back Yamaha artist and friend, the internationally renowned jazz pianist, composer and broadcaster Julian Joseph, to join Richard. Julian and Richard make a powerful workshop combination, as teachers discovered to their delight at the 2009 workshops, so we know that teachers attending this year’s Jazz Experience workshops will be in for a real treat! Dates with Julian Joseph and Richard Michael are: Wed 2 November: Seale Hayne,

There are still a few places left on some of the workshops, priced at £72 per person, on application to education_administrator@gmx.yamaha.com

Jazz Experience 2012

Ensemble Competition for 11-18s Following the success of this competition the first time we ran it, both at its exciting finals at Cheltenham Jazz Festival in 2010 and at the London jazz club gigs awarded to the three winning ensembles in the autumn of 2010, we’re running it again in 2012, so you need to start preparing your ensembles now! Prizes will include exciting gigs for the

three winning ensembles – one gig for each winning ensemble in the under-15, under-17 and under-19 categories – at top London jazz venues. Before then, nine shortlisted ensembles will perform in front of a jazz audience and our judges. This, in itself, will

and participants should bring a packed lunch, a portable instrument and music stand. (If in doubt, please check with us.) You can expect to take away new confidence, skills and some suggested milestones for your own development in jazz and improvising, as well as teaching ideas which you’ll be able to use immediately. We look forward to working with you and with these three inspiring musicians for our 2011 workshops, which we are certain will delight, entertain, inform and inspire in equal measure.

be a wonderful accolade for those who reach that stage. (Date and venue of the final will be confirmed soon but is expected to take place during the summer of 2012.) To enter, participants must form a jazz ensemble comprising piano (or keyboard, vibes or guitar), bass and drums, and optionally up to five additional performers. They must prepare a blues and either a jazz standard or a piece of their own choosing, with improvising at its heart. They must then video the performances of the ensemble’s two pieces, and send them to reach Yamaha by 24 February 2012. In March 2012 two of the distinguished

Yamaha Jazz Experience judges will shortlist down to nine ensembles. These will then perform at the finalists’ event in the summer of 2012 (details to be announced). The 2012 Jazz Experience judging panel includes: Julian Joseph (internationally acclaimed jazz pianist and Jazz Experience workshop leader), Peter Ind (Jazz Experience patron and legendary jazz double bass player), Richard Michael (2009 Parliamentary Jazz ‘Jazz Educator’ award winner and Yamaha Jazz Experience workshop leader), Issie Barratt (National Youth Jazz Collective’s founder and artistic director) and Mercury-nominated jazz pianist Gwilym Simcock. The judges will choose one winner from each age category, looking carefully for creativity, musicality and communication - with both the audience and between band members.
