OPINION

Get your work noticed by heads, parents and decision makers. Be less humble and less modest because what you do for children is too important to undersell

teaching in the first place: to help children flourish and grow. Richard was impressed by the

experience as well. Not least because it gave him the opportunity to work with trainers with experience in other fields.

‘Marc and the Think Again team

have a totally different approach when it comes to training, compared to the sort of thing we have been used to in education. Their ‘outside’ perspectives, and their skills and background in journalism and broadcasting, mean that they have high production and presentation standards, but they also think in different ways. It’s much less directive and didactic and much more about getting people to think differently, helping them to make connections for themselves. This approach can sometimes come as a bit of a shock to teachers, but when they go with it, you can see them getting so much out of it.’

My fellow Think Again directors

are Ian Parkinson and Jane Bolger. Ian is a BBC news journalist and presenter who also managed Radio 1. Jane is a radio and TV reporter who designed and delivered training for the BBC. For our new project, Richard Gerver’s long-term associate, David Bell, also joins the team. David is a musician and composer, but also an internationally known management consultant who has worked with FranklinCovey and some of the biggest names in industry and commerce. By bringing together this array of talent, Think Again Education plans to make a powerful intervention, supporting school leaders up and down the country as they shape the future of education in the UK. Our courses and services will give heads and senior leaders in education an opportunity to meet like-minded people, share in the experience and expertise of successful leaders from other spheres and develop new strategies and ways of looking at the challenges of running a 21st-century school. We’ll also offer a range of networking events and bespoke training, particularly focusing on managing change and building links with the community and business.

For Richard, much of the strength of Think Again Education is that it brings experience and thinking from outside the classroom. Just as he and I were fired up by the vibrancy and energy of a Manhattan-based theatre group, Richard hopes the heads and teachers we reach will feel similarly liberated and inspired. ‘I’m always talking to people in education who instinctively know that things need to change but, because of the nature of their jobs, have very little experience or context outside the classroom. And much of the training and CPD available to teachers has the same limitations. I’ve always felt we need to take educators out of education in order for them to appreciate and develop their own

skills, and to find some answers to the challenges they face. Hopefully, that’s where we come in.’ I’m a great believer in intuition and

instinct. Richard and I look forward to empowering heads, teachers and senior leaders in education to make the changes that they know are right for their schools and their children. Today’s young people can’t wait. It really is a no-brainer!
