MAINE MARITIME MUSEUM Museum After-school Program receives grant support from

Maine Arts Commission

BATH – For more than three years Maine Maritime Museum has sought to broaden the community impact of its Discovery Boatbuilding Program while filling a greater need for more after-school programming for local teens.

That vision will become reality during the 2011-2012 school year as the Museum launches a new after-school program funded in part by a grant from the Maine Arts Com- mission, an independent state agency sup- ported by the National Endowment for the Arts.

The Commission approved the Museum’s grant application under its SMART Grant program. SMART grants help fund projects that take place in or around schools, occur during regular or after school hours, and provide experiences in the arts by giving primary and secondary students op- portunities to work with master teaching art- ists.

Like the Discovery Boatbuilding Pro- gram in which 7th and 8th grade students learn the basic skills and techniques of tradi- tional wooden boatbuilding, the after-school program will take place in the Museum’s Boatshop. While the new program will incor- porate basic tenets of the current program’s curriculum, it will branch out beyond boatbuilding and venture into the arts. Under the guidance of Boatshop Man- ager Kurt Spiridakis, up to ten 8th grade students each semester will learn basic woodworking skills, and work with local wood artists, including carver Wayne Robbins, model maker Jerome Morris and inspirational furniture master Thomas Moser, as they explore the medium of wood. Participating students will work in the Boatshop two days a week from 3 to 5 p.m. Each student will complete a major work of art they have individually designed and created. Scholarships are available. For addi- tional information and enrollment specifics, interested parents should contact Kurt Spiridakis at (207) 443-1316 x 334.

PENOBSCOT MARINE MUSEUM RECEIVES $42K EDUCATION GRANT Will Fund Curriculum Materials, Teaching Kits, Website for Pre-K

Through High School

Penobscot Marine Museum has re- ceived a $42,000 “Museums for America” grant from the Institute for Museum and Library Services in Washington, DC. The federal funding will support expansion and improvements to the museum’s educational services over the next 18 months. “We are thrilled to receive this new fund- ing award,” said Betty Schopmeyer, the museum’s education director. “It will enable us to teach literacy skills and provide other education programs to more students in more schools throughout Maine.” According to Schopmeyer, the grant award was based partly on the museum’s successful use of an earlier grant to create Penobscot Bay History Online (www.penobscotbayhistory.org), an education website focusing on the history of Penobscot Bay, and to align its educational programs with the Maine Learning Results, the document that describes the skills that students throughout the state at all levels of public education must master.

With the new funding, the education website will be expanded and updated with new primary source materials for students and new chapters on maritime history. The museum’s Maritime History and Literacy Curriculum, which is used in school day and after school programs in several communi- ties, will be organized into kits that can be rented out, greatly reducing the costs to school districts. Some curriculum units will be revised for use at the preschool level by Head Start and other early childhood pro- grams. Finally, the curriculum will be updated to correspond with the new Common Core Standards, which will soon replace the Maine Learning Results.

The Institute of Museum and Library Services is the primary source of federal sup- port for the nation’s 123,000 libraries and 17,500 museums. Museums for America is the Institute’s largest grant program for muse- ums, supporting projects and ongoing activi- ties that build museums’ capacity to serve their communities.
