Another aspect of the business that is doing very well are the zero base solar pow- ered generators. They recently sold 15 of these to the United States Army.
At Journey’s End Marina in Rockland it has been a very busy summer especially with transient work. They saw a couple of ground- ings and a number of re-powers, some of which were on commercial boats. One of the commercial boats in was the 36 foot MISS JODI from Owl’s Head, which had a C-9 Caterpillar put in. Another of the commercial boats had a rebuilt 12-cylinder IVECO in- stalled.
Fortunately there was little damage by the remnants of Hurricane Irene. This boat went ashore at Belfast and was hauled out at Belfast Boat Yard.
As with most boat yards the hurricane had Journey’s End hauling 170 boats, plus their yard boats. They hauled so many boats that they had to buy more jack stands. They also had to keep the hydraulic pump on the Travelift cool by placing ice on it. Most all of those hauled went back in. Early in October they started hauling again and this will not be completed until the end of the year The fall workload sees more re-powers and bottom jobs. Presently there are three or four soda blast jobs that need to be done. There are also several electrical jobs to do. Building ‘A,’ which is over the water and housed 65 boats, is being totally redone and made bigger. They are making this building 2 feet higher, which will allow them to put the travel lift inside. They hope to start this project this fall.
The gundalow under construction at Portsmouth, NH is moving forward. She is expected to be launched late this fall.
Brooklin Boat Yard in Brooklin recently sold an S-boat and they are now finishing her restoration. Her hull is complete and they are
now working on the deck framing. They are finishing up a new keel and floors for a Center harbor 31. To perform this job they had to cut a section of the hull, approximately 8 feet x 2 feet to make the repairs. This boat went aground while being towed.
Another victim of hurricane Irene oc- curred at Blue Hill. She is a Concordia yawl, which dragged her anchor in Blue Hill and suffered damage to her bow and bow plank- ing. She is currently being repaired. KATRINKA, a classic fiberglass sail- boat, is in the shop after having lost her mizzen mast during the Classic Yacht Re- gatta. This will be replaced this winter In the upper shop is a Grand Banks trawler, which is in for topside paint. A 15 square meter is in for restoration. Her hull is okay, but she will need a new house and decks as well as rigging. She was formerly a bright hull, but will now be painted. WILD HORSE, a W-76 designed by Joel White, is in for new teak decks.
As for new construction they are build- ing another 25 foot jet boat just like the one they built three or four years ago. They also have another person interested in one. Another interesting project in the main shop is THE HAWK, a 1968 Bill Tripp, Jr.’s design, and is an IORC boat, which had been built in Germany. She has a very interesting racing history. She is double-planked, glued mahogany and some of the planking is checked. This is being repaired with splines and covered with fiberglass. They are all so straightening out her ballast keel. All the frames seem good, but there will be a little refastening to do. The interior has been stripped and she is now waiting for a new owner.
The Atlantic Boat Company in Brooklin launched George Morris’ new HOLY MOLY, of the DUFFY 35 model.
George approached Atlantic Boat with a challenge: DUFFY 35 able to cruise long- range at 22 knots at 80 percent engine. The main goal was weight reduction, with sound secondary.
The hull’s fiberglass laminate was rede- signed, engineered to ABS standards; car- bon fiber stringers increased the strength of the stringers; the interior cabinetry was built from foam core composite fiberglass and in-
