“This contract enables us to maintain a strong base of quality shipbuilding jobs in Maine and continue our contributions to sustaining the U.S. Navy fleet,” said Jeff Geiger, president of Bath Iron Works. “It provides Bath Iron Works with a healthy backlog of work and reflects the Navy’s con- tinued commitment to the DDG-1000 pro- gram, as well as their confidence in our ability to build and deliver all three ships of this class.”

Geiger said, “Winning this work is a result of our commitment to operational excel- lence and to finding more efficient, affordable ways to operate in every part of our business. It gives us the opportunity to continue intro- ducing new and innovative ways to build capable ships for the Navy.”

“We appreciate all the support the Maine Congressional delegation has pro- vided to this program. Their commitment to national defense and their advocacy on be- half of the workers of Maine has been a crucial factor,” Geiger said.

The first ship in the class, DDG-1000, is over 50 percent complete and is scheduled to be delivered in 2014. The DDG-1000 Zumwalt- class destroyer is the U.S. Navy’s next-gen- eration, guided-missile naval destroyer, lead- ing the way for a new generation of advanced multi-mission surface combat ships. The ships will feature a low radar profile, an inte- grated power system and a total ship comput- ing environment infrastructure. Armed with an array of weapons, the Zumwalt-class de- stroyers will provide offensive, distributed and precision fires in support of forces ashore.

Work is already underway at the ship- yard on DDG 1001 and DDG 1002. Congress previously approved funding for advanced procurement and initial construction of these ships. Bath Iron Works is the lead designer

and builder for the program which employs approximately 5,400 people.

In other news BIW has started work on demolishing its old inclined shipways, in a major initiative to further improve shipbuild- ing efficiency. The area occupied by the ways will be leveled and reconfigured to support the construction of units for the DDG 1001 and 1002 ships, plus future DDG 51 class destroyers. The rebuilt zone will have sta- tions for outfitting and storage, and a support facilities building. As part of the project, the outfit support towers (OSTs) on Shipway 1 will be relocated to Shipway 3. The project is scheduled to complete in the first quarter of 2012.

Hadden Boat in Georgetown has the hull planked and faired on the new Vinnie Cavanaugh designed powerboat. In the bilge they put in tar, which they got from Pennsyl- vania. This keeps the water from sitting be- hind the frames and rotting them. They put a fiberglass tube in the shaft log since this boat is going to go south. This will prevent ship worms from getting in and eating out the keel. This boat is going to be powered with a 260- hp Yanmar diesel and this should fit under the platform deck. Presently they are working on the cabin sole and ceiling. The platform beams have been cut out and the bulkhead is in place.

This boat will sport a simple interior. The head will be forward, two berths, Concordia pilot berths on either side, and the galley will be on both sides aft and simple with a refrig- erator, sink, and a diesel stove that will double as a cabin heater

This boat will be done late in the summer of 2012.

At Boothbay Harbor Shipyard in Boothbay Harbor has the Portland fire boat up on the railway. They are swapping her propeller, painting her bottom, touching up the topsides and putting on zincs. She should be overboard the middle of September. It will be a busy fall at the yard. A 125 foot Feadship power yacht is coming in to have her bottom maintenance done along with system work. It is unknown how involved this project might get.

The 123-foot ketch GALILEO G. will be hauled up this fall and have her bottom paint stripped off. She will also have some miscel- laneous system work done.
