the breast What’s best for
With October Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Mr Haresh Devalia – Consultant Breast & Onco-plastic Surgeon at Nuffield Health Tunbridge Wells Hospital – offers this advice for self-examination.
l Know your breast – look at it and feel it. l Look for nipple retraction, nipple deviation, skin retraction or restricted breast movement while elevating the arms and if in any doubt about what you find, contact your GP urgently and you will be seen within two weeks.
l One in eight women will develop breast cancer at some stage of their life. The youngest woman diagnosed under my care is a 24-year-old in Tunbridge Wells and
a 14 year old with lymphoma of the breast at the Royal Marsden. No age is immune to breast cancer, so take anything you find seriously.
l Every breast lump requires assessment, which includes clinical examination, imaging (mammogram and/or ultrasound) and a biopsy.
