Otherworld-The Isle of Mist
A look behind the pages of Adrian Bailey’s first foray into the world of literary fiction.
This book tells the story of a mysterious island, the Isle of Mist, home to lumbering giants and flitting fairies (although you don’t call them that to their faces). An Isle of witches and wizards, ruled over by a powerful sorcerer named Manannan Mac Lir. What would you say if I told you this Isle was real? That the story is based upon real characters, real history, real folklore and traditions. That you can go there and visit all the places the book mentions and maybe, just maybe, discover the secrets of the Isle of Mist for yourself. That is exactly what apprentice conservator Wally Gobbet does after finding a forgotten medieval manuscript in the basement of the British Library. It leads him on an adventure to the Isle of Mist and beyond where the power of magic comes from - the Otherworld. On the way he battles the agents of a sinister organisation called ‘The Order’ as well as dragons and hobgoblins. He meets new friends and together they must thwart the plans of the Strifelord, who plans to destroy the world of magic forever.
Whether your preference is Viking history, fairy folk- lore, or just an adventure in which five friends meet and vanquish evil, this book has it all. This is a story with real depth, drawing on the history and culture of the Isle of Man – as well as the ancient Celtic and Norse mythologies. Here you find the escapism of The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe, the adventure of The Hobbit, the magic of Harry Potter, the intrigue of The Da Vinci Code and the camaraderie of Enid Blyton’s Famous Five all in one book for children of all ages.
Adrian started working on this book in the summer of 2008, purely because he wanted to raise money for his local children’s hospice – Rebecca House on the Isle of Man. At that time he had no ambition to be a writer or for the book to be published. His plan was simply to write it and cover the cost of printing so that Rebecca House would benefit from all the money raised.
So, secure in the knowledge that he might sell a thousand copies, and armed only with the ‘Complete Idiots Guide to Writing a Novel’ ( his own words), he decided to try to write the next bestseller. How hard could it be?
7
He deliberately tried to write a story that would appeal to readers of all ages, in a style which made it easy to read out loud. Little did he know that his manuscript would be picked up by a publisher, not only in the Isle of Man, but also in the UK and the USA – with even more interest globally. But Adrian still insists on bearing the Isle of Man printing costs himself, as that was his original intention.
You really have to read Otherworld – the Isle of Mist for yourself to appreciate the wonderful imagination and wicked sense of humour. Please have a look at the website to find out more, as any orders from this site will benefit the Hospice. This is an unusual book which would make a marvellous Christmas present, and raise money for a good cause at the same time.
