BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee has completed a $6 million US effort to encrypt all at-rest data throughout its enterprise. The encryption project follows a data breach in October 2009 in which 57 hard drives were stolen from a BlueCross facility. The hard drives contained audio and video recordings related to customer service tele- phone calls from providers and members, and included varying degrees of personal information on about one million mem- bers. “The lessons we learned from the theft led us to go above and beyond cur- rent industry standards, and our team has worked tirelessly to put new safeguards in place and encrypt all our at-rest data,” says Nick Coussoule, senior vice president and chief information officer for BlueCross.
According to a new survey by Trend Micro on consumer behaviour and sentiment around online security, 61 per cent of re- spondents click on links while online that take them to unexpected places. Sixty-six per cent reported that they would be fi- nancially susceptible if their computers were accessed without their permission, while 67 per cent said they would be dev- astated if they lost everything on their computer and/or connected device.
The FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) has issued an alert about an online car- buying cyberscam. Ac- cording to the FBI, between 2008 and 2010, IC3 received nearly 14,000 complaints from con- sumers who were victimized by online auto-buying scams. Victims report losing nearly $44.5 million US.
THE SECURITY SENSEI SECURITY NO-NO!
Q: My security provider has advised me to install cellular back-up technology in my home’s alarm system because of the communication redundancy it offers. Is this worthwhile? A: Absolutely yes. A cellular back-up dialer is a necessity for any commercial or residential security plan because most phone lines are readily accessible from the exterior of a dwelling leaving the wires exposed to would-be criminals. A home invader can easily damage the phone box and/or cut the phone lines deactivating the only means of communication between the alarm system and the alarm monitoring company. In this scenario the homeowner could not rely on the assistance of the local police department or quite possibly worse, the fire department. Additionally, I strongly suggest connecting a simple UPS battery back unit (Un- interruptible Power Supply) to your new or existing alarm system. A UPS is readily available at most electronic stores for $60, and will allow the security system to function during a power outage.
Having consulted with law enforcement and crime prevention officers for nearly 16 years, I can unequivocally say, not implementing a back-up cellular dialer is a big security no no!
