SUMMER 2011 2011 BERT ZENATY ’50 SCHOLARSHIP AWARDED

Herbert B. “Bert” Zenaty ’50 was born in Rochester, N.Y.; raised in Prague, Czechoslovakia; and returned to the United States at the age of 15. Zenaty graduated from Springfield College in 1950 and became a program director for the YMCA in Pittsburgh, Pa. He later worked for the former Addressagraph-Multagraph Company in Connecticut and served as the alumni fund director at Springfield College for more than 20 years. Zenaty was an outstanding soccer player during his time at Springfield College and had many interests including outdoor sports, music, the arts, traveling, and spending time with family and friends.

To honor Zenaty’s memory, his service to the YMCA, and his belief in the Humanics philosophy of spirit, mind and body, Bert’s wife, Dottie Potter Zenaty ’65, former field hockey coach and the 2003-2004 Distinguished Springfield Professor of Humanics, established the Bert Zenaty ’50 Scholarship in 2002. Tis scholarship is awarded annually to a rising senior from the YMCA professional studies program, physical education program, or a service- related major who directs and demonstrates his or her abilities and energies toward working with others in a community or educational setting.

Te 2011 Bert Zenaty ’50 Scholarship recipient was Brittany Mitchell from Springfield, Mass. Mitchell is a youth development major and minors in YMCA professional studies. In addition to being a full-time student, she works as an after- school site director with 52 middle school-aged

youth at the YMCA of Greater Springfield’s North End Youth Center. Mitchell has been involved with the YMCA since the age of five and was honored to receive the Bert Zenaty ’50 Scholarship.

Te scholarship fund assists undergraduate students interested in pursuing a career in the YMCA with the expense of a Springfield College education. Tank you to the 49 YMCAs across the nation that supported this important initiative in 2010. We hope to encourage more YMCAs to participate in this year’s campaign, so that more students may afford the education that will prepare them for a career in service to others.

Te partnership between Springfield College and the YMCA is 126 years strong, and the scholarship fund helps ensure that the College continues to educate qualified students in spirit, mind, and body who will be ready to serve the YMCA in the future.
