THE TIMES - SPRINGFIELD COLLEGE OFFICE OF YMCA RELATIONS NEWS SCHOOL OF HUMAN SERVICES PROVIDES PROGRAMS FOR YMCA EXECUTIVES


Te Springfield College School of Human Services (SHS) Executive Master’s Program has prepared nearly 100 senior YMCA executives for leadership in their organizations. During four residencies throughout an 18-month period, executives design and present action-research projects that will impact their Y communities. Executive master’s program participants find that their visions for the future and leadership capabilities are transformed in the process of earning their master’s degrees.

In addition to the executive master’s program, working YMCA professionals may earn their bachelor’s or master’s degrees in human services at SHS campuses throughout the United States. Te School of Human Services offers:


t Bachelor’s and master’s degree programs in human services


t Weekend classes t Degree completion in as little as 16 months t Financial aid for qualified students

We are proud to share that Dana Prazynski ’11 recently accepted a full-time YMCA position with the Somerville (Mass.) YMCA as the aquatics director, and Garrett Brolsma ’11 has accepted the position of youth sports and aquatics director with the Fort Worth YMCA in Texas.

Te programs are ideal for YMCA professionals wishing to complete their bachelor’s degree or move on to their master’s degree. In addition to a program specifically designed for working adults like YMCA professionals, special opportunities are available:


t Up to 72 credits may be brought into the undergraduate program through transfer credit from a regionally accredited institution and/or experiential learning, including YMCA program certification courses and management modules.


t YMCA Matching Scholarship funds up to $5,000 per year on a dollar-to-dollar basis are available through the School of Human Services to all YMCA professionals whose YMCA financially supports its employees with tuition reimbursement.


Classes normally meet two weekends per month. Te schedule makes it possible for working adults to attend college full time and meet family needs while earning a human services degree. Te 85th annual Stepping Up Day ceremonies were held April 14 on the Richard B. Flynn Campus Union patio. Tis historic tradition signifies the ascension of first-year students to sophomore status; sophomore students to junior status; junior students to senior status; and senior students to alumni. In addition, many awards are presented to exceptional students, including many who represent the YMCA professional studies program. David Burckhard ’11 was awarded the Frank Stanley Beveridge Award; Jamie Kriger ’11 was presented the Student Humanics Award; and Sara Graber ’12 was honored for personifying the Humanics philosophy. Dana Prazynski ’11 was awarded the Lawrence Handy Prize for demonstrating outstanding leadership to the YMCA Club and for representing the YMCA spirit at Springfield College. Te award was


presented by Director of YMCA Relations Harry Rock. Kriger and Katherine Ward ’11 were among the Who’s Who Award recipients, chosen for their excellent academic standing with outstanding involvement and participation in cocurricular and/or extracurricular activities on campus. Tese students model the College’s Humanics philosophy with its mission of academic excellence, education of students in spirit, mind, and body, and leadership in service to others. YMCA international studies program participant Kristina Dupuis ’12 was sworn in as the new Student Government Association president. A separate luncheon was held for former Springfield College field hockey coach Dottie Zenaty to present Brittany Mitchell ’12 an award established in honor of Zenaty’s husband, Burt, a longtime employee of the College (see page 7).
