As part of last year’s Strategic Defence and Security Review, the Government has committed to developing a New Employment Model for Service Personnel. Here a member of the team at MoD explains in principle.
T
he MoD recognises that the current employment model for Service Personnel has not changed significantly
in over forty years and requires updating to better meet the needs of the Armed Forces of today and tomorrow.
At the heart of the New Employment Model (NEM) is the desire to promote greater stability in Service life while at the same time optimising operational capability. Therefore the NEM intends to better balance the demands placed on our people and their families, while providing greater domestic stability central to spouses’ employment and children’s education.

In the longer term, the NEM team are due to report their findings before the Defence Board in the autumn of 2012. These will be drawn together into a package of options for consideration by the Defence Board. Once this has been agreed, it is expected that implementation will start in 2014/15, with some measures taking up to ten years to complete in full.
