2010/11 THE LITTLE
Written By Lillian Hellman
Directed by Ivo van Hove September 10 – October 31, 2010
Acclaimed Flemish Director Ivo van Hove and Production Designer Jan Versweyveld returned to NYTW this fall to launch the 2010/11 Season with a highly stylized production of Lillian Hellman’s classic family drama The Little Foxes. A minimalist set, sleek wall- to-wall purple carpeting adorned only with four chandeliers, and an ensemble stripped of traditional southern accents illuminated the core of Hellman’s characters and script. Chris Kompanek of The Huffington Post asserted that “from its jarring opening, van Hove throws us into the ferocious action as the characters claw at each other to assert their own identities.” This radical re-imagining of The Little Foxes gained critical acclaim due to van Hove’s startlingly fresh vision and was seen by an audience of 10,462 people.
PIANOS THREE
Written, Arranged and Performed By Rick Burkhardt, Alec Duffy and Dave Malloy
Directed By Rachel Chavkin
December 7, 2010 - January 16, 2011
Next, NYTW welcomed audiences to Three Pianos, a delightful theatrical explosion of theatre and music created and performed by Rick Burkhardt, Alec Duffy and Dave Malloy. The three actor-musicians led the audience through their respective passions for Winterreise, Schubert’s famous song-cycle about winter heartbreak, by performing the songs, grappling with fundamental questions about the nature of music, passing bottles of wine around the audience and re-enacting a Schubertiad, one of Schubert’s famous late-night parties. Michael Feingold of the Village Voice stated that Three Pianos “is improbable as it is delightful, a loose-jointed, totally off-the-cuff, booze-and-music party, in which every casual moment seems both astutely chosen and precisely executed.” Audience demand for Three Pianos led to a sold-out extension, and it gained an audience of 8,657 by the end of its run.
“
...serious and seriously goofy, ingenious and intentionally messy meta-theatrical music-appreciation party called Three Pianos.”
Linda Winer Newsday
“An absolute masterpiece. It’s the reason we go to the theater.”
Chris Kompanek The Huffington Post
