Maryland Will Miss
Paul Lloyd Babington of Union Bridge passed away on July 11 at the age of 78. He was a lifetime member of the Maryland Quarter Horse Association and the president in 1984. In the early 1960s, Paul began showing Quar- ter Horses after having trained many AQHA Champions. In 1975, Paul and his horse, Bo James, earned Reserve High Point Junior Western Pleasure Horse in the nation. He be- came a well-known breeder and trainer in the Quarter Horse Industry. As a Texas Longhorn owner, Paul was a lifetime member of the In- ternational Texas Longhorn Association, TL- BAA member, and member of the Longhorn Marketing Alliance. He enjoyed attending and managing auctions for longhorns, as well as horses. Paul was also the owner and operator of Babington Paving Company. James Edgar Byron Sr., formerly of William-
sport and Hagerstown, died on July 2 at the age of 83. By- ron was an avid foxhunter and horseman and was a member of New Market- Middletown Hounds and Antietam Hunt where he was a fi eld master and honorary secre- tary. Byron mar- ried Lynne Ker-
win in 1952 and the couple lived at Still House Springfi eld Farm. T e farm dates back to 1755 and is now the Springfi eld Farm and Museum.

...Fred Homan, who was injured in a fall from a rental horse on Saturday, July 9, 2011 while trail riding on the North Central Railroad Trail (part of the national Rails To Trails network). Fellow trail riders, including Karen Buck and an unnamed medical doctor, assisted the top aide to Baltimore County Executive Kevin Kamenetz, Homan, and he was quickly medivaced to Maryland Shock Trauma. For reasons that are unclear to T e Equiery, the Baltimore Sun has posted edited recordings the 911 calls. We did not listen to them. Homan was released from the hospital on Tuesday, and the Sun’s article indicates that Homan has suff ered severe head trauma;

ron served as mayor of Williamsport
from 1961 to 1965 and was a board member of the Washington County National Sav- ings Bank. During his tenure as mayor, Byron worked with G. Victor Cushwa to establish the Potomac River Park. Robert Johnson, 73, of Rising Sun, died on June 24. He was a U.S. Army veteran and worked for 39 years in the Grounds Depart- ment at the University of Delaware. Johnson rode horses and was a member of the Cecil County Farm Bureau.
Helen Virginia Neel Poff enbarger of
Woodsboro died on June 21 at the age of 93. She was an active horsewoman and kept horses and ponies for her children and grandchildren. Wilhelmina “Minny” Pohlmann died on June 8 at the age of 92 in Frederick. Pohlmann was instrumental in developing the base of Sug- arloaf Mountain and ensuring the mountain and its surrounding areas remained rural. Pohl- mann lived for more than 40 years on her farm at the base of the mountain in Dickerson. She was an assistant planner for Frederick County in the 1960s and 70s. She successfully down-zoned wide areas of land around the mountain from being classifi ed as industrial to being reclassifi ed as open space. She was also part of the group that established the Monocacy Natural Re- sources Area. Pohlmann also spent thousands of dollars of her own money to buy acreage around the mountain that had full development rights, continued...
