ASSOCIATION OF BUSINESS SCHOOL (ABS)

The rapid growth of

international business over recent years and the increasing emphasis placed on management skills has meant that employers want graduates who have studied subjects at degree level or beyond.

When asked about what they want from graduates, most employers will respond with a list of attributes that include written and communication skills, analytical and research capabilities, good interpersonal skills and, increasingly, an understanding of other cultures. Business degrees are generally seen as a good means of developing these abilities. So whether someone wants to work in an accountancy practice, management consultancy, local government or a charity, the skills

they can gain from one of these courses will place them in a strong position to get a job and build a career.

Read on to discover about how one student used industry experience to get further ahead. ABS has an online searchable course directory including over 1500 courses, please visit:

CASE STUDY

MSc Information Systems and Management Freya Livsey MSc Information Systems and Management Warwick Business School University of Warwick

"I've actually gained a lot more from the course than I’d anticipated. I'm beginning to understand IT from a business perspective – that was my goal – but I've also learned how to interact with people from different cultures and working backgrounds.

Teaching is very hands on' and the first module was one of the best academic experiences I have ever had! We were instantly involved with the working world, learning how to interact with Board members, compiling documentation in the attempt to win the bid, and, of course, having fun with the group.

In all the modules, I felt that this emphasis on collaboration was invaluable in preparing us for the real world. I've realised the technology sector is so much more than just programming. I now have the opportunity to have a career in Consultancy or IT Management.

The level of support I received from my personal tutor was unlike anything I'd ever experienced. They were outstanding, ready to listen to any problems and guide me through my career and further study options. I think the work the academic staff do behind the lectures is a credit to WBS."
