SIX SOCIAL MEDIA TIPS FOR UNIVERSITY LEAVERS


If you’re a new university graduate you are probably very familiar with social media and are on networks like Facebook, Twitter and, now, Google+ on a daily basis. Now that you’re heading out into the job market for the first time, you may not realise that social media can be incredibly valuable in your www.simplyhired.co.uk job search as well as your social life. Shifting from using social media as, well, a social tool to a professional one isn’t always effortless. Here are a few tips to help you transition from student social media expert, to professional social media expert:


Clean up your online presence:


According to a study done earlier this year, half of employers reject a potential worker after looking at his or her Facebook page. Remove anything that could be damaging – from incriminating photos of you at a party to comments about your hangover – and lock down your privacy settings. Ask yourself if you

would be happy explaining your photos to your future boss. Letting your mum see your Facebook profile is a great idea, if there are things you are uncomfortable with her seeing, it isn’t clean enough!


Create your online brand:


make sure that your Facebook, Twitter, Google+ (and any other social media tools you’re using) and emails are all professional and, ideally, use your name. You’re establishing a personal brand and you don’t want to apply for jobs


with the email address “fluffy123@ hotmail.com” on your CV. Joke Facebook names and Twitter handles from university such as John ‘the lad’ Smith are no longer acceptable! If you can’t bear to leave a silly email address in the past, consider creating a new email account specifically for your job hunt. Your online usernames are part of your profile, so it’s important that they look professional. Plus, it’s easier for prospective employers to find you online.
