deserved more than simply something that worked in a past case. They deserved the value of my struggle to understand how I felt about the case and about these people. They also deserved my effort to find a way to communicate that message to the jury. I looked longingly at the closing argu-
ment form books sitting on the shelf. The temptation was strong. I considered
how much easier it would be to use a tried-and-true formula developed by one of the “Masters.” But, I also had to acknowledge that something this im- portant deserved my being courageous enough to honor the uniqueness of the case. My frustration and anxiety grew as
I rejected approach after approach, looking for some way to avoid having to find and express my own feelings. I questioned why I had accepted the case in the first place. I knew how impor-
tant it was to this family. What could I possibly have been thinking? If I really care about these people, I should have referred them to one of the giants. But, of course, the hour was too late for that kind of thinking now. The time for sum- mation was here. I decided that I may never agree to try another case in the future, but for this case, it was too late. I could not be as brilliant or as eloquent as the great lawyers I had heard speak at CLE programs over the years, but I was the one charged with the responsibility
