Legislative Report (Continued from page 5)
outnumbered by the teams of lobbyists sent to Annapolis on behalf of the Cham- ber, the insurance carriers, the various municipalities and the interests of busi- ness. While it would be presumptuous to suggest that we have leveled the playing field, our hiring of a team of lobbyists has, at the least, greatly improved the odds. To pay for this increased effort, MTLA recently approached its members and asked for personal contributions. The response was overwhelming, and the sup- port the Association received from its members illustrates their belief in our commitment to continue to work in An- napolis for the passage of meaningful legislation. Many thanks to all who gave so generously (see page 7). Mitch Lambros, MTLA’s Legislative Vice Chair, and Allison Kohler, our Fundraising
Chair, spearheaded the fundraising drive, and they deserve special thanks and rec- ognition.
MTLA’s New Legislative Team The trio of lobbyists assembled by
MTLA are truly a TEAM, each with his/ her own special talents that work effectively together. Daniel T. Doherty Jr. has worked as a lobbyist in Annapolis for over 25 years and, as a practicing attorney, has a clear understanding of the issues facing trial law- yers. Michael Arrington is a former state delegate from Prince George’s County with strong ties in Annapolis. Mindy K. Binderman is an attorney with unmatched enthusiasm who most recently represented Planned Parenthood of Maryland.
Supporting MTLA Through Membership
If the Maryland Trial Lawyers Associa- tion is to forge ahead with increased
representation in Annapolis, we need greater participation of all trial lawyers. I cannot imagine any practicing attorney that handles personal injury claims not belonging to MTLA. Tell your friends the value of your membership. Convince them to be supportive of the work we do by joining the Association. The dues re- main reasonable and are a small price for the services and benefits of membership.
Keeping You Informed
During the legislative session, I will post updates on various bills and legisla- tive issues on MTLA’s list serv. If you have email and you’re not on the “list,” you are missing a valuable forum and exchange of ideas and information. MTLA will also send a mailing to members to keep you apprised of legislative developments. You can also follow the progress of any bill or find out how to contact your legislator at
