wasn’t already enough to lay claim to, the maternal home and family roots of the first President of the United States of America is also found in Lancaster County. All in all, Lancaster is the birthplace and chosen home to people just like you and me, from every age, who went on by choice or by chance to accomplish extraordinary dreams and goals. Lancaster is and has been home to intriguing, resilient and determined individuals, who through courage or necessity blazed their own trail in this life. Oh, if only I could write about them all!

Tangier Mary Ball Washington


The first historical figure that comes to my mind when I think of Lancaster County is Mary Ball who would become the wife of Augustine Washington and the mother of the first President of the United States. She was born around 1708 at Epping Forest, near Lively. Her father (Joseph Ball) served as a ranking Justice on the Lancaster County Court, was a leader of the Lancaster militia and served in the House of Burgesses from 1695–1702.
