To them, he offered the advice to be patient, to develop their skills in clear thinking, to be grounded and realistic in their planning for the future, and to keep their hearts open and to make the best of whatever life delivers. Even though that message was for the youth, it applies to us all in a profound way. It is not helpful to fall into despair about the state of the world, nor is it helpful to pretend it will all be love and light if we chant enough over our crystals. He drove that point home by focusing his attention on a mob of monks sitting near the stage when he spoke of the need to be socially engaged, to be out there in the world doing real and useful work to help people realise more of their potential for happiness. In conversations afterwards with friends,


we talked about the tendency of many well- meaning souls to misinterpret the message to help others find happiness. Using His Holiness as an embodied example… he does not roam the world challenging people with the stark message of their profound ignorance, their mental laziness or their chronic self-interest. He offers messages of inspiration and truth, and then leaves it to the listener to do with it what they will. In other words, while he works himself to the

bone in service to humanity and all living things, he is ultimately detached from the outcomes of his work. My guess is that he knows all too well


that suffering will continue in large scale for the remainder of his life, and that much of that suffering is self-induced most of the time, but he does not take the suffering into himself as his own. He just loves everyone to the best of his ability (which is rather considerable), gives us a message of compassion and kindness and the healthy pursuit of happiness, and then moves on. He is not at war with ignorance… if he were, he would quite probably be utterly exhausted. He is, rather, a messenger of inspiration. He embodies the ‘good stuff’ to show us all how it can be done, without requiring us to be like him.


Terry is owner/director of the Worldview Centre, a residential retreat centre dedicated to the opening of consciousness. The physical centre was, however,


recently destroyed in the Queensland floods. He is qualified as an Expressive Therapy counsellor. He is on the Executive Committee of the Men’s Wellbeing Association, an initiated Elder in that community, and an author and workshop facilitator.
