Check out this amazing band who are causing a big uproar up North…
T
o be voted Best Overall band in the Playmusic Unsigned Awards demands exceptional qualities and Skarlett Riot has the full package: Great tunes, a cool image, some very impressive self-produced videos and terrific stage presence
from Bjork lookalike lead singer/rhythm guitarist Chloe (Skarlett) Drinkwater and Les Paul wielding lead guitarist Danny Riot. The band, which also features Tom on bass and Danny’s younger brother Luke on drums, met whilst all four members were still at school and their age range spans between their late teens and early 20s. Chloe explains that Skarlett Riot only formed around a year ago but most of the band had already worked together previously playing in a local covers band named ‘Fusion’. “Since we started Skarlett Riot things have really stepped up another level”, she says, “We’ve been able to get some great reviews in Kerrang! and Metal Hammer. Luke Wilkins on Kerrang Radio compared us to Guns n’ Roses and Courtenay Love, which can’t be too bad!” With two of the band holding down day jobs, Chloe and Luke are
still in the education system, which luckily gives Chloe the extra time to squeeze in her role of unofficial band organizer alongside her Music Tech studies. “It’s quite crazy sometimes’” she admits, “but we manage it fine, I always do all the booking, getting the shows and we do the gigs at night and use any holidays to book mini-tours. We are constantly out gigging. Everyone thinks that I am the band promoter but I do a bit of both, I book all of our gigs and right now we are sending our press packs to labels and management companies. We’ve got a lot of press building up; we are really excited to announce the Playmusic Award. It’s brilliant!” The band’s current tracks were recorded at Axis Studios in Doncaster
and available for download via iTunes, Spotify and Amazon, although with Chloe currently studying music technology at University who knows? She might end up producing the band’s next sessions herself? “I’m taking recording next year, so I can bring the band in and record and mix them. We’ll use that to get some more demos recorded.”
22 3pickup Skarlett Riot are a great live band whose energy and professional
approach to performing definitely puts some signed bands to shame, but have the band been to any big gigs lately that have blown them away? “Papa Roach at Sheffield 02 Academy!” Chloe states without any
trace of doubt, “It’s a big venue but it still feels quite compact. You get a great sound and you can see the band from wherever you are standing, so it’s brilliant! We supported Heaven’s Basement once and they were supporting Papa Roach that night, so it was great to see them up there with Papa Roach.” When asked if Skarlett Riot would jump at the chance of taking a
punt at the big time, Chloe unveils the band’s mission statement with typical focus. “We’d love to. As a band we’ve spoken about it and as soon as Luke
and me come out of education we are hoping to put together a full tour and get out there, we think that’s what it’s all about, building the fan base and getting people following you. We don’t have too much of a music scene where we are based but we are always travelling to gigs. We are doing Manchester, Sheffield, Bradford…we’re getting into as many cities as possible. We haven’t hit London yet but we’re hoping to get down to London next year. Gig swaps are great, we’ve had some offers for gig swaps but most of them have come from bands based in LA! We’ve been told that we fit in better in America because of our music style and we get asked a lot if we are American!” “At the moment we are working on new material, we are going back
into the studio around August and hoping to release our first proper album around Christmas. We’re getting it on Amazon and iTunes and we plan to send it out for more reviews and just keep building on that. We’re trying to get it into HMV, but we need to see if we can afford to that, and then we’re eventually going to hire a booking agent to help us book better and bigger venues.” Armed with such a professional approach to their craft, plus a clutch
of great tunes, the right look and a burning hunger for success Skarlett Riot have our tip for a very bright future indeed. PM
