Marden comes to
Burma bearing cash MEMBERS of St Michael and All Angels Church raised £3,000 for a visit to a training centre in Burma. Marden parishioners saw 16 women undertake training to be catechists in the diocese. The trip also included visits to an orphanage and children’s day care centres. A print of Marden Parish Church and a card from the Sunday club were presented to the Bishop of Myitkyina, the capital city of Kachin State.
Boy injured by lorry A TODDLER was taken to in- tensive care after an accident in East Farleigh involving a lorry. The three-year-old boy was
taken to the Royal London Hos- pital after residents reported him pulling a chain at the back of the vehicle, causing the back panel to lower.

Expansion plea falls on deaf ears
ACOLLIER Street woman’s plea – “from the bottom of my heart” – failed to dissuade Maidstone Council from allowing the ex- tension of a neighbouring industrial site. The planning committee granted consent
for an L-shaped extension to provide an additional 882 sq m of floorspace for Blades Joinery and JW Timber at Longend Lane. But the decision was only made after a statement from Lynn Gadbsy, representing herself and the five dwellings at nearby Brook Farm, preceded a debate on the mer- its of the scheme. She said: “I have lived here for nearly four
years and most of my time has been spent at home as a housewife, gardener and mum to my now five-year-old daughter. As a re- sult I am unfortunately impacted by the fumes, noise, loud music and bad language from the industrial units every day.
“This will only get worse if the applica-
tion is granted, which will result in more traffic, more noise and more smells. “We picked this little slice of the country-
side because of its secure and peaceful lo- cation away from the road noise and pollution, and because we want to raise our children in its beautiful surroundings. I am appealing to you, from the bottom of my heart, to save the home life we have cho- sen.” Her sentiments were echoed by Collier
Street Parish Council, which had particular concerns about flooding, and by borough Cllr Annabelle Blackmore. JW Timber claimed that the extension would bring together its operations in one location – removing the need for vehicle movements between Collier Street and its machining service site in Staplehurst. According to planning officers, no resi-
dent complaints had been made to the En- vironment Agency about the current opera- tions. It was also argued that the council might find it difficult in the event of an ap- peal to prove that the extension would cause material harm to neighbours. Committee member Cllr Tony Harwood
had reservations over drainage, landscaping and accommodating endangered bats, but these were addressed by amended condi- tions that satisfied the majority of the com- mittee. Cllr Rodd Nelson-Gracie, the local ward member who also sits on the planning com- mittee, said: “If we refuse this applictaion, the noise will not go away. If we approve, residents are not going to be any worse off than they are at the moment.” He urged residents to contact the envi- ronmental department if they suffer any fu- ture disturbances.
