SCOTCH TOM McLELLAN

The Single Malts of The Lowlands

In previous editions of Bounder, we have visited Speyside, The Highlands and Islay.

Malt whisky is usually associated with the northern areas of Scotland, but there are still a few distilleries worth mentioning in the lowland areas.

At one time the lowlands boasted 14 distilleries. However, today only three remain: Glenkinchie, near Edinburgh; Auchentoshan, close to the River Clyde; and Bladnoch in Galloway, close to Wigtown.

What’s of greater interest is that

Yours Truly and two good friends ( Frank Nieuwkoop and Brent Anderson) will be visiting Bladnoch in mid-June, as well as playing golf at the Celtic Manor and Royal Troon. (So stay tuned for the next edition, when pictures of Scotland’s version of “The Hangover” will be available after screening!)

Traditionally Lowland Single Malts are triple distilled, which is why they typically have a lighter taste.

So, as we intend to visit Bladnoch en route from Wales to Troon in Ayrshire, I’ll focus on Bladnoch.

38 BOUNDER MAGAZINE

Bladnoch lies in Galloway, only about a 90-minute drive from my home town of Dumfries.

Bladnoch is also Scotland’s most southerly distillery, and was originally a farmhouse developed around 1814 by the McClelland family.

The distillery has changed hands and seen several closures over the years, but is now doing very well under the ownership of Raymond Armstrong,

an Irishman, who acquired the property in 1994. It now boasts a very nice visitor centre and has its own very friendly Internet site.

As small as it is, it produces 100,000 litres of pure alcohol each year. And as underestimated as it is as a malt, Bladnoch produces some of the finest malt anywhere in Scotland.

If we are feeling generous, we’ll bring a bottle of 15 year old back for Bounder’s esteemed publisher.

So stay tuned. I’ll do my best to keep my Canadian buds (one is more Dutch than Canadian) in tow.

But there’s no guarantee. www.bounder.ca
