Kent County Council’s Community Wardens help local residents in many ways. They deal with a wide range of issues, from abandoned vehicles and doorstep callers to raising awareness of fly tipping and graffiti and giving advice on home security to the elderly. They are familiar faces in local communities and as well as helping people on a one-to-one basis, they also get involved in youth clubs, coffee mornings and local events.

To highlight just some of the work of Community Wardens, the warden for East Malling, Mandy Harris explains about the activities she has recently been involved in. These included helping children learn about road safety, supporting a local resident to speak out about her learning disabilities and making sure young people have somewhere to go.

If you live in East Malling, Mandy can be contacted on 07813 713035.

Keeping safe on the roads is an important lesson for us all and it’s never too early to learn. So Mandy went along to Mrs B’s Nursery in Chapman Way, East Malling with the Dog Warden from Tonbridge & Malling Borough Council to talk to the children about road safety. The children and staff enjoyed the fun presentation and joined in with the discussions.

A free community event at Aylesford School brought together disabled groups, carers and other support services in celebration of the achievements of people with learning disabilities living in the community. Mandy Harris helped local resident Linda Bailey, who has learning disabilities, to give a speech about her life living in the community and the support she receives from Mandy and the other organisations which help her to live a safe and independent life.

There was also an excellent drama presentation performed by The Scotts Project which was very well received. The Project, based in Tonbridge helps adults with disabilities to gain important life skills as well as enjoy fun activities. Their performance showed how important the support they received was to helping them live in the community.

The Kent Youth Bus is a way for local young people to have somewhere safe and most importantly fun, to go to on a Thursday evening. Mandy supports the bus and encourages young people to go along and see what’s on offer. It gives them the chance to be part of the community in which they live and over the summer, the bus will be at the Institute car park every Thursday evening from 6:30-9pm where there will be opportunity to take part in activities, play sports and meet friends.
