53 Teignmouth Fairtrade Friends
In order to end the scandalous exploitation of producers in developing countries, the Fair Trade Foundation has established two main criteria for describing products as fairly traded:
• The company pays the producers a fair price for the goods and pays a premium which the producer communities can use as they see fit to develop facilities such as clean water, health care, education and community projects in their own areas.
To qualify for Fair Trade Town status a town must • have a certain proportion of businesses, shops, cafes and restaurants offering Fairtrade products
• have a proportion of community groups, schools, healthcare services and churches also using Fairtrade goods
• have the support of the Town Council in promoting the principles of Fair Trade
In 2003 TFF was formed with the object of securing this status for Teignmouth which was achieved in 2005, and has since been twice renewed. Our latest directory shows the level of our support, and gives details of contacts. Copies are available in the Library, the Tourist Information Centre - and look for our sticker in shops, cafés etc. We participate in carnivals, run Fairtrade stalls in the Triangle and in the Co-op, and we invite speakers from producer countries who consistently outline the benefits which Fair Trade has brought to their communities
This year well over 60 people attended a stimulating and well illustrated presentation from Abdoulaye Diakite, a cotton grower from Mali, West Africa.
In his commentary, and in response to questions, Abdoulaye highlighted the problems small growers face in competing with cotton from countries which subsidise their industry. Forming larger co-operatives and working with the Fair Trade Foundation has brought huge benefits to his community in terms of education, healthcare and hope for the future. With your support we can do so much more for people around the world.
