2 JAPAN REBUILDS How the Japanese film industry is dealing with the impact of March’s devastating natural disaster and helping the rebuilding process

Japan: strength in adversity I

t is a privilege for Screen International to celebrate the Japanese film industry in this special Cannes supplement in a year which has seen Japan over-

come one of the most devastating natural catastro- phes in modern times. The Japanese people impressed the world with their resilience, stoicism and determination to move on from the earthquake, tsunami and threat of nuclear disaster which struck the country on March 11. The film industry was affected, as was every indus-

try in Japan, but in this supplement, presented by Screen and the Tokyo International Film Festival (TIFF), it is clear the industry across all sectors is already back on its feet. TIFF is gearing up for its 24th edition, which takes place October 22-30. It’s heartening to see such a robust Japanese

presence in the official sections of the festival this year. There are two titles in competition — Takashi Miike’s Hara-Kiri: Death Of A Samurai and Naomi Kawase’s Hanezu, while Sion Sono’s Guilty Of Ro- mance is a special screening in Directors’ Fortnight. Screen’s Japan correspondent, Jason Gray, takes a

look at the career of veteran actress Kyoko Kagawa, who is being feted with a major retrospective at TIFF this year. Her resumé encompasses some of the great- est films ever made, some or all of which will be shown at TIFF. It’s a fitting reminder in a challenging year for the country that Japan has produced some of cinema’s greatest stories. And, through Miike, Kawase and Sono here at Cannes, continues to push the boundaries of film.
