XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX JAPAN HOT PROJECTS HOT MARKET TITLE COMPETITION
HANEZU (HANEZU NO TSUKI) One of Japan’s most successful arthouse directors, Naomi Kawase returns to the Cannes Competition four years after winning the Grand Prix for The Mourning Forest in 2007, and once again creates a portrait of humanity through a mysterious melding of history, nature and spirituality. Set in the mountainous Asuka region of Nara, considered the
birthplace of modern Japan, the fi lm focuses on modern couple Takumi and Kayoko. “Hanezu is a fi lm that depicts, against the background of Nara’s deep history, what it means for people to live out their lives. To live as the ancients lived. Their tale continues a story of the ages,” Kawase explains. International sales Memento Films sales@memento-fi

UNDERWATER LOVE — A PINK MUSICAL Japanese ‘pink fi lms’ — 35mm soft- core adult features — have been the proving ground for many of Japan’s great directors. Leading pink fi lm fi gure Shinji Imaoka teamed up with cinematographer Christopher Doyle to create this surreal, sexy musical about a woman who falls in love with a mythical river-dwelling humanoid creature known as a kappa. Co-produced by Germany’s Rapid Eye Movies and pink fi lm production company Kokuei, Underwater Love — A Pink Musical had its world premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival.
