OSAMU TEZUKA’S BUDDHA — THE GREAT DEPARTURE The late Osamu Tezuka is famous around the world for creating Astro Boy, but the godfather of manga and anime was also behind a wealth of literary, historical comics including the 14-volume Buddha, which won two Eisner Awards in the US. Toei Animation veteran Kozo Morishita is adapting Tezuka’s epic tome into an animated trilogy which chronicles the life of Siddhartha, from prince to the founder of Buddhism. The fi rst fi lm is unveiled at the Cannes market this year. Featuring voice work by Sayuri Yoshinaga
and Masato Sakai, Osamu Tezuka’s Buddha – The Great Departure opens in Japan on May 28 through Warner Bros. The fi lm will have its international premiere out of competition at France’s Annecy International Animated Film Festival in June. International sales Toei

GUILTY OF ROMANCE (KOI NO TSUMI) Japanese auteur Sion Sono follows up shocking serial killer drama Cold Fish with this examination of female desire, domestic subjugation and murder. Making its world premiere as a special screening in
Directors’ Fortnight at Cannes, Guilty Of Romance further cements writer-director Sono’s status as an in-demand fi lm-maker at major festivals. The fi lm stars Miki Mizuno, Makoto Togashi and
Megumi Kagurazaka, and completes the unoffi cial trilogy which began with Sono’s award-winning opus, Love Exposure. Cold Fish premiered in Venice last year and will be
