HARA-KIRI: DEATH OF A SAMURAI (ICHIMEI) Producers Jeremy Thomas and Toshiaki Nakazawa team up once more with Japanese director Takashi Miike following the international success of 13 Assassins. Hara-Kiri: Death Of A Samurai screens in Competition at Cannes as the fi rst 3D fi lm ever to vie for the Palme d’Or. The fi lm stars famed kabuki performer Ebizo Ichikawa as a poor samurai who requests to commit ritual suicide in the courtyard of a feudal lord as his tortured family history is revealed. The fi lm is based on the Yasuhiko Takiguchi novel


which formed the basis of 1962 classic Harakiri (Seppuku). Miike’s skill at handling samurai action with a strong sense of drama led to 13 Assassins’ Venice slot and sales deals in more than 30 territories. KAIBUTSU-KUN: THE MOVIE Kaibutsu-Kun is a big-budget 3D live-action adaptation of the popular 1960s children’s manga and anime series. It follows the adventures of the titular young crown prince of Kaibutsu Land (Monster Land) and companions Dracula, Wolfman and Franken on an adventure to the Kingdom of Curry, where he is mistaken for a legendary warrior. In what may be a fi rst for a major Japanese production, Kaibutsu- Kun was shot on location in India, in the city of Jaipur. Satoshi Ohno, the lead singer of Japanese pop group Arashi reprises the lead role from the TV series. Directed by Yoshihiro Nakamura (Golden Slumber, Fish
