ALAIND LARSE IN CONVERSATION WITH
LARRY ANDREOFF
THE FIRST TIME I MET LARRY WAS IN QUEBEC CITY IN 1987. HE WAS PART OF THE ALBERTA SNOW SCULPTING TEAM THAT HAD JUST WON 1ST PLACE IN THE NATIONAL SNOW SCULPTURE COMPETITION, AND WE SHARED A FEW CELEBRATORY BEERS TOGETHER. AFTER SEVERAL MORE INTERNATIONAL AND NATIONAL COMPETITIONS, AND SEVERAL MORE BEERS, WE HAVE DEVELOPED A LASTING FRIENDSHIP. WHEN ASKED TO DO A MAGAZINE ARTICLE ON HIS RECENT SCULPTURE I GLADLY ACCEPTED THE CHANCE TO DIG INTO THIS CREATIVE MIND. I HAVE RUMMAGED THROUGH HIS WHAT HE CALLS ‘MINIMALIST’ WEBSITE TO GET AN OVERALL PICTURE OF HIS WORK AND THIS SHORT INTERVIEW ENSUED:
I have just visited your web site and noticed that you paint, sculpt and design in a variety of media. What do you prefer? I really don’t have favourites. Each medium has its own flavour... I tend to go with the flow.
What do you mean by flow? I’m kind of laid back, which doesn’t mean I’m passive, but I usually take what life sends my way... opportunities like commissions or things that excite my imagination. When I latch on to something I get very focused and the adrenalin kicks in. I like taking risks.
What kind of risks? There are always risks in creation. The biggest for me is what I call my “approval syndrome”. Whether it’s a portrait, a web site, or a sculpture, my ego is always seeking approval. The risk for me is to get past myself and my desire for appreciation. I find that if I don’t, I’ll end up creating garbage. Don’t get me wrong; I like my work to be admired just as much as anyone else. The difference is that I don’t want to start with that goal.
Do you have specific goals when you begin a work? I always try to keep communication as a background target. Then each work or series of work usually has something that I want to achieve. How usually depends on a lot of variables. For instance, commissions or commercial projects come with limitations... and hopefully I can work within them. If I am working on my own stuff I can play around a lot more!
