Food festival wins a ’rural Oscar’
The Hampshire Food Festival, organised by county food group Hampshire Fare, has won the South of England Enterprise category in the Countryside Alliance Awards, known as the ’rural Oscars’, and has gone forward to the British finals.
The Countryside Alliance Awards celebrate the characters, produce, traditions and enterprise of the countryside through the people who work so hard to make it tick.
There was strong local competition to take the southern titles, according to head judge Sara Rutherford of The Countryside Alliance: “The rise and rise of this food group has done an immeasurable amount to boost support and information about local produce and its benefits, and Hampshire Fare is a fantastic example.
“The Hampshire Food Festival is a month-long showcase of the best Hampshire has to offer. A 10-year- old initiative that every county should emulate, it ticks all the boxes – food and farming, rural life, tourism, health, education – and is an excellent shop window for the county.
“With more than 200,000 people taking part in the 2010 Hampshire Food Festival, this is a serious economic and social event, and
we are proud to salute Hampshire Fare’s great achievements during the Festival’s first 10 years.“
Added Festival organiser Sophie Boxall of Hampshire Fare: “This award is a credit to all the producers, businesses and organisations that get involved in or support the Festival and enable so many visitors to enjoy Hampshire’s food and countryside. Plans are well underway for this July’s Festival, with some exciting new events and annual favourites.“
The Countryside Alliance regional award for The Hampshire Food Festival follows the gold won recently at the 2010 Beautiful South Awards, organised by Tourism South East.
The Hampshire Food Festival will now compete against 11 other Enterprise award winners from across the UK at a grand final reception at The House of Lords, held as The Business Magazine was going to press.
• There is still time for Hampshire businesses and organisations to get involved in the 2011 Food Festival.

Two more Champions come on board
Warings and the Go Ahead Group are the latest organisations to become City Champions and support the work of Business Southampton.
More 150 companies are now City Champions and their aim is to improve the city and promote the name of the Southampton region far and wide.
As a member of Bouygues, the international construction and services group Warings offers a local focus with an international capability from its headquarters in Portsmouth. Commercial director, Allan Gordon, said: “It makes complete sense for us to become
City Champions. We had heard a great deal about the benefits and we look forward to being fully involved over the coming years.“
The Go Ahead Group is made up of a number of bus and coach companies, including Southern Vectis, Blue Star, Wilts & Dorset, Tourist Coaches, Damory Coaches and Hants and Dorset Trim.
Alex Carter, managing director of the Go Ahead companies in the south acquired in 2003, said: “We are always enthusiastic to work closely with the business communities where we provide either public transport or private coach hire.“
