THOUSANDS FLOCK TO ORLANDO FOR THE ROTOR- CRAFT INDUSTRY’S HOTTEST TRADE SHOW


I love Florida. I’ll take the heat, I’ll take the occasional hurri- cane, and I’ll even take the crowds at all the theme parks. Each time the Helicopter Association International holds their annual HeliExpo in Orlando it always goes off, seemingly, without a hitch. The sheer magnitude of this show, from load in to load out is sim- ply amazing.


This year’s show was one for the books. Nearly 625 exhibitors filled the Orange County Convention Center (OCCC), and unof- ficially pre-registered attendance was up nearly 20%.


Both the


number of exhibitors, and pre-registered attendees are record set- ting numbers. In a resort town with so much to do, the numbers of folks trekking along the carpeted aisles of the show was impressive.


THE NEW EXHIBITS


You name it, if it had anything remotely to do with rotorcraft, or aviation you would find it at this show. Although all the familiar faces were in place, it was very encouraging to see so many new com- panies and new products on display. One such company, Presagis, was a first time attendee at HeliExpo with a new and interesting sim- ulation product. Presagis has developed a fixed based, computer driven, flight training device that is not only easily configured, it is quite affordable as well. Another company we were pleased to see for the first time was the folks at Big Ass Fans. All you had to do was step within thirty feet of their display and you noticed a quick (and wel- come) drop in the temperature. Looking up, you saw a ……. you get the picture. Yet another first time vendor was Snap On tools. While tool vendors can be found on nearly every aisle, Snap On has brought something that is not only innovative and unique, it can truly enhance safety and save thousands. They have developed a tool sys- tem, to include giant toolbox, which keeps track of and accounts for your tools. Each tool has a Radio Frequency ID tag assigned, with an accompanying computer, which alerts you whenever a tool is not in it’s assigned place. One FOD’d out engine saved and this jewel has paid for itself.

more vendors, representing more diverse products and services, than there have been since 2008. I would consider that encourag- ing news for an industry that has certainly felt the sting of the recent economic downturn.


OVER $1,000,000,000.00 SOLD


No one will dispute that the number of new helicopter sales announced since 2008 has been very disappointing. Last October, at the Air Medical Transport Conference in Ft. Lauderdale that trend began to fade. At that trade show over 350 million U.S. dol- lars in new medical helicopter sales was announced. Although every- one was delighted with the news, they remained cautious, not yet ready to declare an end to the market slide. Well, although much of the fanfare and hoopla were a bit subdued, HeliExpo 2011 was quite remarkable from an aircraft sales perspective. Still below the overall numbers of just three years ago, well over one billion dollars of new aircraft sales were announced during the show. There is no question that will translate into robust business, and future job growth throughout the market.
