Spiritual Awakenings

abuse. It is any moment when personal boundaries, whether fragile or strong, are overwhelmed. This means that trauma doesn’t just happen in New York or Japan; it occurs within each observer’s physiology during observation. The importance of remaining in present-time awareness resides at the heart of our capacity to survive upheaval and transition times. Stress and trauma memories trigger an adrenaline reaction, a fight-flight- freeze response that enables survival, but simultaneously represses immune system function. One cannot remain in such a state for prolonged periods of time without a price. Whenever adrenaline rises, our immune systems are suppressed.

Inherent in the design of the

bodymind is the capacity to freeze all imagery and sensory data and repress it into the subconscious until we have time to reframe or discharge it. Though we can’t change history, the emotional charge that traps or binds us to the scene can be released. That which binds us to certain events, such as trauma, is the polarity or emotional frame of the stored image. How one receives traumatic information, the body’s responses to these events and the skills to cope all contribute to the speed of recovery from trauma. Much that was labeled migraine,

chronic pain, post-traumatic stress disorder, premenstrual syndrome, autoimmune disorders, depression and many other conditions reveal themselves as the byproduct of unresolved trauma or memory. These discoveries have prompted the emergence of breakthroughs in the fields of somatic (body-centered) psychology and energy psychology. With the growing capacity to

resolve such moments of encoding, we gain the ability to change history – at least as the bodymind stores it. We can grieve and move through trauma when we are not trapped in the imagery and feelings. With this wisdom comes the capacity to actually map and resolve the traumatic imprints that lead to pain
