WINTER 2011 YMCA TEENS VISIT SPRINGFIELD COLLEGE FOR “WHY THE Y” EVENT


On Nov. 11, the office of YMCA relations sponsored “Why the Y,” a Springfield College and YMCA Career Exploration Program. Tis program is especially designed for YMCA teens in grades 9-12. Te goals of the program are to emphasize that college is an option for everyone and that the Y offers a wide range of career opportunities for young adults to explore


and consider. Tere was a full day of activities and presentations providing information on academic and co-curricular programs, the admissions process, and student life through a panel of college YMCA students. Representatives from Ys in Connecticut, Massachusetts, and New York, including New York City, attended.

and leadership opportunities. While there, students worked in groups to build bicycles from boxes of parts for disadvantaged children. Te exercise fostered leadership, teamwork, and communication skills within the students.

On Tuesday, May 18, seven Springfield College students and Director of YMCA Relations Harry Rock traveled to Virginia Tech University in Blacksburg, Va., to attend the Coalition of Campus YMCAs (CCY) student conference. Te CCY conference is unique in that students both plan and conduct the specially designed series of workshops, volunteer experiences,


Tere are 22 colleges and universities across the country that support Y student activities on their campuses. Tis year, students from 16 colleges and universities traveled from places like Hawaii, Illinois, Washington, Missouri, Ohio, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Texas, Wisconsin, Minnesota, and Tennessee. Two Y campuses from Hong Kong also attended. Springfield College students who attended include Bryan Bierman, Elliot Irizarry, Garrett Brolsma, Alyssa Ruta, Hollie Badger, Amanda Driscoll, and Ashley Ryan. Bierman recently stepped down from his elected role of treasurer of the conference, and Irizarry was elected in his place. Brolsma was elected vice-chair of the May 2011 conference, to be held at the University of Toledo (Ohio).

On the weekend of Nov. 12-14, Director of YMCA Relations Harry Rock and 15 Springfield College students attended the YMCA Northeast Leaders Rally held at YMCA of Greater New York Camp Greenkill. Te rally was attended by teen Leaders Clubs from Ys in the greater New York area and various New England states. Te weekend was filled with activities and workshops exploring the core Y values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility, and personal leadership. Te conference focused on personal change and how individuals can create positive impact within the world. Te Springfield College students planned and implemented workshops, and participated in each group.
