SPRINGFIELD COLLEGE OFFICE OF YMCA RELATIONS NEWS WINTER 2011
DIRECTOR’S CORNER Harry Rock, Director of YMCA Relations
With the completion of the $9.4 million renovation of historic Judd Gymnasia, the new Stitzer YMCA Center unofficially opened at the beginning of the fall 2010 semester. Te reaction to the facelift of Judd, originally constructed in 1894, by touring students, staff, alumni, and visitors has been overwhelming. Te Stitzer YMCA Center is highlighted by the beautiful stained glass window over the double entrance doors. It includes the corporate offices of the Association of YMCA Professionals (AYP), the Springfield College Office of YMCA Relations, the campus YMCA Club Room, the YMCA Hall of Fame, a multipurpose room, and the YMCA of the USA staff office, housing the resource director who supports all of the YMCAs in Connecticut and Rhode Island. In addition to these offices, the building is home to the Springfield College Office of Alumni Relations, the Springfield College Archives and Special Collections, two teaching classrooms, and the large meeting room called Union West that can hold 450 students. Also, four stunning stained glass windows that depict the enhanced YMCA logo and various College triangles adorn the new Springfield College Museum.
Te new Stitzer YMCA Center will make a significant impact on prospective students, who will realize that the YMCA is both a special and an important part of the Springfield College campus. Te official dedication ceremony of the Stitzer YMCA Center is on Tursday, May 19, at noon. All interested individuals are welcome to attend and celebrate the strengthened relationship between Springfield College and the YMCA movement nationally and internationally.
