becomes ill, has an accident, or there is an emergency? • Are there
facilities for first aid?
• Who knows where you are?
Location Risk and High Risk activities
When work- ing on location (right) you should carry out some form of risk assess- ment. For some
clients this will be part of your contract. You should visit the location before any work is car- ried out to look at the risks to you and third parties.
If you get involved in wildlife photography or extreme pursuits you should ensure that you have assessed all aspects of the exposure and where necessary had special training. E.g. hang- ing out of helicopters requires a degree of training!
Equipment Risk
You will also want to ensure that your equipment is safe from damage and theft. After all, your camera equipment is your livelihood! Make sure all equipment is stored in secure places. When in open spaces make sure you keep the equip- ment close to you at all times. Limit the amount of equipment you take out to the essentials. Never leave equipment on show in vehicles – consider anchoring a container in the boot of your car or van with an appropriate lock. A relatively low cost solution could save you considerable inconvenience and in the long run save you money!
Occupational road risk
You have a duty of care under health and safety legislation to- wards any employee who drives on business and any other per- son they may come into contact with while doing so. You must carry out risk assessments and provide appropriate training.
This also applies to staff that
use private vehicles for work- related activities. Even if you ask someone to drop the post off on the way home you have a duty of care. It’s important that all drivers are assessed. Licences should be checked, business mile- ages monitored and managed, accidents should be reported and investigated and vehicles must be regularly inspected and properly maintained.
There should be some way of knowing the movements of all employees when on company business, particularly if they attend high-risk locations.
Premises Risk
If you have a studio you will also need to consider the fol- lowing risks:
Fire protection Electrical faults Poor storage practices Smoking Arson
Protection of occupants Falls, trips and slips Manual handling Fire safety Electricity
