REMOTE CONTROL DIVERS!

Tyne and Wear Marine Ltd and its Owner and Managing Director Jeff Main has been providing service in the region for 27 years, the last 25 years from the Port of Tyne estate in South Tyneside.

TWM’s business environment is river frontage with quay space which places the company in a unique position to rise to the challenges of evolving the business to meet the exciting developments of the wind energy industry.

INNOVATION

A very important part of the company’s continuing improvement is providing innovative, safer, more flexible and cost effective solutions to clients. Specifically the introduction of a micro ROV (remote operated vehicle) plus multibeam sonar and sidescan sonar to carry out underwater survey and inspection of boats, barges, dock gates, outfalls and pipelines fits the bill very well.

The ROV team are all highly skilled divers and so the usefulness and comparison of using a ROV on jobs where a diver may have previously been used is being assessed by individuals who have been there, done it and ‘wear the tee-shirt’. These divers between them have clocked over 80 years diving experience in thousands of situations. Some of these situations have been in uncomfortable, dangerous and in hostile environments.

EXPERIENCE AND ENVIRONMENT

Jeff has over 35 years in marine based business and heads up a highly skilled multi-disciplined workforce who have continuously evolved the business over the years to flexibly meet the demands of its wide client base. Predominantly, but not exclusively to marine and civil engineering companies, TWM delivers bespoke services, often one-off high profile, unique projects and events. These demand innovative ‘thinking outside of the box’ creative approaches providing practical solutions.

THE SHARING OF KNOWLEDGE

Jeff and his team want to share their knowledge and experience which will raise the awareness of the benefits gained in using a ROV approach. Following on from a successful event hosted by TWM in 2010, a further two are planned for 2011 to explain the features and benefits of using a ROV. For example, where you wouldn’t or couldn’t use a diver on jobs because of safety, or inability because of confined space situations, or simply where a ROV provides a better solution.

The event venues have been chosen to utilise a marine environment so that a practical demonstration of a ROV can be incorporated and even the opportunity for curious participants to give piloting and handling it a try!

CREATIVITY

The team is blessed with creative minds. One team member, a qualified Special Effects Technician has worked on a number of feature films including the underwater scenes in the fourth Harry Potter film, The Goblet of Fire. Not only did this team member design and make them, he actually installed them underwater as well! Now that’s what you call a transferrable skill set!

The usefulness and versatility of a ROV is not well known and based upon Jeff’s discussion with clients previously, its effectiveness was doubted regarding river use.

With over three years since TWM introduced the method into their business there is sufficient experience and success to share with others.

The team will also be sharing information with participants at these events some of the bespoke attachments and pieces of additional equipment they have designed and manufactured in order meet the demands of some of the more unusual projects.
