AEM YORKSHIRE OFFSHOREWIND SEMINAR –WAKEFIELD

THE SEMINAR

AEM Yorkshire is to be congratulated on their organisation – the fact that everything ran smoothly is testament to the preparation behind the scenes. There were a few changes to the original programme, but you would not have noticed as all the speakers gelled together nicely. Alan McLelland, who opened and chaired the proceedings, commented that because of the changes all the speakers had got together to ensure that the day was seen as a whole and not as a collection of individuals. This not only helped give the speakers direction but also served to give the delegates focused and valuable information to take away with them.

There were breaks and a generous lunchtime for networking before a reasonably early conclusion to allow busy managers to get back to work in the afternoon. Very sensible in these days of ‘too much to do and not enough time to do it in!’

THE SPEAKERS

Alan McLelland introduced and chaired the programme for the day concentrating on offshore wind, which included two main areas...

• Market access • Upcoming markets

Then it was over to the main speakers for their presentations...

KevinWilkinson – Siemens • Reasoning why wind power is here – projected energy outcomes, sustainability and energy security

• Additional elements which sometimes do not catch the eye e.g.– how we bring energy into the national grid

• Government commitments • UK plans for future offshore wind power projects

Steve Clark – Mainstream • The importance of the supply chain • Planning consents • The Super Grid – an emerging second industry opportunity offshore

• The initiatives in place for Mainstream and the wider industry

• Smart Wind and the importance of young people’s involvement and development

• The wider technology transition to help us drive down the cost of energy

Andrew Fox – Yorkshire Forward • Offshore wind status – Yorkshire and Humber region

• A flavour of when and what is happening in the sector and region

• Onshore and offshore market differences in scale and logistics

• Manufacturing needs and opportunities • Skills and training requirements

Neil Etherington – Able UK • Brief on Able UK • Details of the planned Humber Port Facility

• Strategy for site selection • The planning approval process • Realistic future expectations

David Sierwald – David Brown Gear Systems • Company history and involvement in the wind industry • Quality assurance attitudes • Joint ventures with like minded companies • The scales, the opportunities and the challenges • Prototypes and trials • Timescales and timelines

All the presentations were followed by fairly lively Q and A’s which always indicates a well structured and informative day well suited to the audience.

Further Q and A’s and closing remarks were chaired again by Alan McLelland who managed both the questions and the day extremely well.
