TRAINING THE TRAINERS


Steve Green highlights what underpins the Siemens training ethos.

Renewable UK estimates that 60,000 employees will be required over the next decade to meet the growing needs of the Renewables Sector in delivering Government targets by 2020 (15% of energy from Renewable sources). Such statistics are borne out by leading industry players, such as Siemens, which is seeking to double its Renewables workforce by 2013. Unable to satisfy this entirely from the existing employment market means that skills and training come ever more to the fore. Equipping staff new and old with the right technical and health and safety skills for what is still a rapidly developing industry in the UK is critical. For Siemens with a large and well-established training culture and commitment to Zero Harm, developing its in-house capability was a logical next step.


In 2008 Siemens Renewable Division decided to commence delivery of wind power training for its service technicians. A partnership was formed with what was then the existing fossil fuel training school (now the world- leading Integrated Energy Service Training Centre at Siemens Energy Services business in Newcastle). A key driver and imperative behind the new wind power school was to ensure that Siemens technicians received the very best in health and safety training as part of Siemens Zero Harm culture. The school was rapidly expanded from this point onwards to become a stand-alone entity within the Centre. The new school started by delivering courses over a four-week period consisting of basic safety training.


In April 2009, Steve Green, its first- ever training manager was recruited and the Wind Power Training Centre has developed rapidly ever since, expanding its throughput of trainees and scope of training and courses. Siemens has offered this training not only to its own employees, but also to its customers, as well as third party sub contractors required to undertake specific ad-hoc tasks on site.

Trainers undergo an intensive training program at Siemens Wind Power Global Headquarters in Brande Denmark before commencing training in Newcastle. Since opening for business in 2008, the Centre has seen over 400 course places delivered in Basic Height Rescue, Advanced Rescue, covering evacuation from Hub and Yaw, as well as technical interventions such as Electrical fault finding, Bolt torque, Turbine Erection, and fluke electrical safety.
