In this addition, we are going to look at one of the nation’s that emigrated to this country and worked alongside others to systematically rebuild this wonderful land after the damage of the Two World Wars. One of those coun- tries was India. Now, being the vast land that it is, we are going to take a segment of the country that being Gujurat - which is a multi province of India and is an example of a typical village that would dictate the surname of its oc- cupants as well as the dialect they speak and we will briefly study one of its twenty languages as well as its cuisine. Following this, we shall establish just what makes this incredibly industrious country as a whole, tick. In addition, we shall look at how the Indians have successfully managed to integrate their culture within the British culture. Creating ‘subcultures’ if you will, in areas such as Southall, Wembley and Leicester!

Tell us about major industries in India.


In the first instance India has a large agricultural sector producing rice, flour, wheat and cotton, which falls into the textiles remit. With India being seen as a bit of a Mecca for business, it is also renowned for its genius in manufacturing

cars, steel and not forgetting its huge influence in both the music and film industries. Generating huge block buster’s like Bride and Prejudice starring the sensational looking Aishwarya Rai!


Historically, what periods do you think had an impact on the Indian culture?


In the 10th and 12th centuries most of northern India was governed by Dehli Sultanate and then the Mughal Empire. Eventually, the Mughal Empire started to dissipate and the


Hindu Maratha Empire became their successors. In the interim all this turmoil and disruption was being closely monitored from lands far overseas such as Great Britain, Netherlands, Portugal, Denmark and France and by 1856 India became a colonial country. That is until of course, Independence Day in August 1947, which marked the start of global relations with other pioneering countries such as Russia, Israel and France.


Is there a typical cuisine?


Dhaar – soup which comprises of blended lentils, it is also really good for colds. There is also a dish called Bhaat which is rice. Shaak, which comprises potatoes, peas and different types of vegetables and finally, Rotli, which is flat bread.


Where is India located? India is located in South Asia. It is to the South East of Pakistan. The seas bordering India are the Bay of Bengal and the Arabian sea.
