Kix: How did “One” come together? Who produced it and did it get the reception that you expected? D Dark: I created ‘One’ sometime last year in my studio, I think I was just messing with a synthesizer and started creating some bouncy baseline and from there I was feeling a different kind of vibe! The beat just made itself from there really and came naturally…….then a few days later I thought of the hook and wrote the verses and voila, there you have it, “ye i be number 1”. Also at a later date, I got some inspiration from a few techno dance tracks I was listening to at the time and added synth stabs which are in the chorus, which gave the track an innovative edge to it, sort of grime mixed with techno and house. The track was then brought to life by the professional mixdown from engineer Danny C.
I’m happy with the reception the track got - I’m still getting great reception now with people telling me they just heard the track and they’re feeling it a lot. Considering it was an independent release by myself with no backing I’m
grateful for how well it did. It managed to get rotated on Channel AKA and Flava, and it’s also been played on a vast number of underground radio stations and commercial stations such as Rinse FM and Kiss FM. Plus the track’s still getting pushed so it’s a good look!
Kix: Although you’re still young, not many know that you’ve been in the game for quite a while. How has that played to your advantage? D Dark: It’s been a great advantage being in the game for so long, because you learn so much and knowledge is power at the end of the day! You learn from mistakes and other peoples mistakes, and its a great journey because you meet all sorts of characters. I’m always coming across new sounds and new platforms to promote my music and what I’ve experienced along the way in the game is priceless. I’ve also worked with the likes of Tinie Tempah and Chipmunk so it goes to show that anything is possible in this game - you can actually make it very far and blow up in this industry. And seeing them do it gives me
the motivation to work even harder to get to where I want to be.
Kix: From the Channel U days to now, how would you say that you’ve advanced with your lyrics? D Dark: I would say I’ve advanced with my lyrics greatly. I’m writing lyrics daily without fail, it comes naturally to me, plus I’m always reading and enhancing my vocabularly. I’m always messing with different flows so I’m always evolving, if not by the day then by the week. When you listen to some of my older music compared to now you will be able to hear the difference in flows and content, as well as the different tech- niques I use to get lyrics across to people.
Kix: What are you up to when you’re not making music? D Dark: I’m always making music (and I mean always!), but when I’m not I like to hang out with my friends, watch movies, sometimes mellow it down with a chick.. you know, just enjoy life. I don’t go raving much because I’m always nurturing my art, but when I do hit the
rave scene! It’s a madness I tell ya! (Laughs)
Kix: Plans for 2011 - are you going to put out a mixtape or an album this year? D Dark: I’ve actually got a mixture finished and it should be out in February. I’m just sorting out all the videos that I’ll be doing for the tracks and all the promotional tools that I’m going to be using. This mixtape has definitely got some amazing work of mine on it.. it’s titled ‘Focused Reality’ and is mostly produced by myself. Also the good news is that the mixtape will be free, and it’s full of goodies so make sure you download a copy when its out!
I’m also working on my album which is sounding crazyyyyyy at the moment, but I’m taking my time with that one. I want it to be right and feel right, it’s not something to be rushed. I’ll probably drop a few more mixtapes and single releases before the album drops, just to keep people hearing me in the mean time, because I’ve got so much music stacked up in the studio ready to be let out!
