Work under way on school’s £6.3m building

WORK is under way on a new £6.3m building for Archbishop Courtenay Church of England Primary School in Tovil. The Bishop of Dover, the Rt Rev TrevorWillmott, took part

in a turf-cutting ceremony to mark the start of construction. Since the school was formed in 2005 through the amalga- mation of All Saints’ and St Stephen’s Church of England schools, the governing body has been working towards plans for a new integrated school. The new premises in Eccleston Road will replace the cur-

rent two buildings in College Road. With 10 classrooms, a nursery facility and a play area, the newschool is due to open early in 2012. Headteacher Louise Stubberfield said: “'We are absolutely delighted that the new school is on its way at last. It has been a long time coming and will provide an excellent, much- needed facility for the children and families of Tovil.” Gary Cooke, KCC’s deputy cabinet member for children, families and education, said: “This new school building will offer first class facilities and provide youngsters with an ex- cellent educational and learning environment.Agreat deal of attention has been paid to making this an extremely energy ef- ficient building and I look forward to seeing it take shape." The Bishop of Dover said: “The blessing of the new school

site is cause for much celebration and reinforces the Diocese of Canterbury’s ongoing commitment to work with the county to provide the best possible facilities for our young people.” With ground source heat pumps, solar panels and a rain-

water harvesting system, the state-of-the-art building will be constructed with under-floor heating. Sensors and automatic opening windows will be installed to maximise natural ven- tilation. The project is funded by a direct grant from the Department

for Education, with additional funding from KCC, Canterbury Diocese’s Mission Initiatives fund and a local trust.

Charity canoe trip is all the fashion

A NIGHTCLUB hosted hundreds of guests at a fundraising event for four Maidstone friends who plan to canoe up the River Yukon.

Guests at Liquid and Envy

were treated to an evening of en- tertainment, which included a professional catwalk show, a charity auction, magicians, dance groups and singing acts, with performances by The Hot Honeyz and Britain’s Got Talent 2008 finalists Milton Keynes dance troop, Nemesis. Guests bid for a range of auc-

tioned items, donated by local companies, which included a

signed X Factor T-shirt, complete with all 16 finalists’ signatures, hot air balloon rides, a cruise, cinema tickets, meals out, ad- venture days, spa days and many more. The canoeists – Nick Hunter,

Darryl Ratchford, Tom Raper and Nick Newell – hope to break a Guinness World Record in June when they canoe the River Yukon, from Canada to Alaska, to raise £2m for their chosen charities Help For Heroes and Marie Curie Cancer Care. The journey will cover 3,185 kilometres of rugged wilderness and will take about 60 days.
