Family tragedy leads to new career DownsMail
AS A book-keeper, Faye Phillips has an eye for figures, but had neglected her own over the years. But the death of her mother from
obesity-related illnesses prompted her to take action over her weight, and she left the world of accounts to embark on a career as a slimming con- sultant. Faye’s weight problem started when
she was young. She started her first diet at the age of 18 and over the next 10 years, her weight fluctuated due to yo-yo dieting and trying out every new eating plan. Her weight had peaked when she
fell pregnant with her son and over the next couple of years, Faye experi- enced some personal tragedies, in- cluding her marriage breakdown. Her mum, Barbara Hayward, had al- ways struggled with her weight and
Pub conversion to help
vulnerable youngsters ANOTHER proposal has been sub- mitted to convert and extend dis- used pub The Royal George, in Boxley Road, Maidstone, into ac- commodation for vulnerable young- sters. In July last year, applicant Lorna Thwaite withdrew her original ap- plication for a 15-room conversion. The latest plan, reduced to 13 bed- rooms, would provide accommoda- tion for young vulnerable people and a base to help them develop their social skills and assist them in coping with the demands of modern society.
had developed asthma and type 2 diabetes in her 50s, and her death at just 66 hit the family hard. It was a turning point in Faye’s life.
When two friends suggested that they lose weight together, the trio joined their local Slimming World group in August. All three had a successful first week and each lost between 5 and 6lb each. Faye, of Thyme Walk, Maidstone,
has recently taken over the group that she attended as a member, losing al- most two stone. She had been unhappy in her job
for years and hopes her new role will give her the chance of helping others avoid the heartache that her family had suffered. Her group meets at West Borough School, Maidstone, every Tuesday evening.
PO plan is turned down again
APROPOSAL to erect two detached homes behind Ringlestone Post Office in Maidstone has been refused for the third time. Applicant Johal Rinikas Ltd, which runs the post office, has
again been thwarted in its attempt to replace the existing de- tached garage structure to the rear of the building at 79-81 Chatham Road with three-bedroom properties. Similar applications were refused in April 2009 and Sep- tember 2009 due to the impact on neighbours’ amenity as a re- sult of an extended driveway, and the applicant felt the revamped scheme addressed this by reducing the scale and in- troducing an acoustic boundary fence. However, Maidstone Council released a statement reiterat-
ing its previous decisions: “The position and intensified usage of the existing access would result in a significant level of noise and general disturbance that would be harmful to the residen- tial amenity of neighbouring occupiers.”
