AS Art students attend etchings workshop at the British Museum

Year 12 etchings which were on display at the British Museum. They can now be seen in the new art block at St Andrew's

AS art students have been priviledged to take part in an etching workshop.at the British Museum We were re-introduced to the work of the Italian Renaissance masters, and talked about the movement of renaissance art. We then looked at their work in the exhibition and later had a discussion about the effect of their drawings on each of us as individual young artists.

Having looked at and studied these drawings from a close distance, we took inspiration from specific outstanding areas of the drawings

and made our own drawings with the areas of interest at mind.

I looked at the beautiful creases and folds in the draped clothing, I found it particularly interesting because it can become the central focal point of a drawing despite the fact that this specific detail is usually forgotten about. So I drew a few sketches of the drapery and based my etching on this.

We then used each of our studies to make marks into a piece of clear perspex using a drypoint tool and sand paper to create smoother

shadows, we then rubbed ink into the marks using news print to rub off the excess paint to make the marks more definitive. Finally, we took a piece of moist water colour paper and put it on top of the perspex we drew on, feeding it through the press to get a print.

It was a new experience for me, because I hadn’t done any etching before. After having tried it, I loved the way it creates a totally different feeling to the usual pencil or charcoal drawing. Each mark is so specific and beautiful in itself. Stefanie Huang
