Grey Coat 12

Physical Education news Westminster champions

On Monday 17th December, our year 7 footballers took part in two fantastic games against Pimlico Academy and St Augustine’s school. Grey Coat won 3-0 and 3-1 with every girl involved working their socks off to ensure victory. I am delighted to announce the year 7 team have now been crowned champions of Westminster after winning every single game and only conceding four goals in the process. This is a phenomenal achievement and all credit must go to the girls for all their hard work and commitment, not just in the actual games themselves, but in training sessions too, since the beginning of September. The girls involved are : Elizabeth Todd, Billie Salami, Oyin Ogunjobi, Anisa Jama, Ruth Day, Antonia Benjamin-Wand, Sarah Tefera, Ocean Lewis, Oumaima Aloui and Yasmina Ramirez Afer. Well done girls. Mr Powell

A memorable victory Just before Christmas, The Grey Coat Hospital football team under 13s had an amazing triumph against Mossbourne Academy football team, where we successfully came from being 2-1 down to win the game 7-4. There was a real buzz amongst the team when we started to turn the game around, as we started to realise that we could win against such tough opponents Throughout the game our physical strengths and endurance as individuals and as a team were really tested. All the hard football training since the start of September (fitness, passing, shooting, tackling, and communication skills) came to good use, as we were able to keep up our stamina, determination and high spirits which were flying even higher after our victory. As a result of winning the match we went home with our heads held high and spread the good news. I was so very proud of how we pulled together as a team and showed great determination to get a good end result despite not getting off to one of the best starts. Being captain of such an amazing skilful team makes me feel very proud to be in this position, where I can play the sport I love and lead others.

On behalf of the football team I would like to thank Mr Powell, for being such a inspirational coach leading us through hard times and especially good times and never losing faith in us, and helping us to reach our full potential through training and matches. I would also like to thank Dave Mabbutt, who helps us in training alongside Mr Powell, as without excellent football coaching we wouldn't have had the skills we have today! I would also like to thank Miss Clohesy who sometimes attends football matches and coaches us too! And to all the other staff that help take us to the football matches, making it possible for us to arrive there safely and the support they give the team. Carla Cooper 8T.

Basketball news

I would like to congratulate the following girls for their triumph in the Westminster Basketball competition on Friday 7th January 2011.

Claudine Jantwah Bonsuh 11c, Simonette Carlton-Carew 11c, Goldie Anaker 11G, Nicole John 11G, Ramona Opping 11c, Valentina Alija 11c, Sabina Sabur 11c, Sabrina Brown 11c, Melita Emmanuel-Carr 11H. Athalia John 11T

The girls showed great maturity as they were missing their basketball coach, which meant they had to organise themselves in terms of formation and tactics. After narrowly losing the first game, they picked themselves up and encouraged one another and were rewarded as they remained undefeated all tournament from there on after! They also cheered on and supported opposition teams whilst waiting for their own games to start which was lovely to see. Well done to all girls involved. Mr Powell
