Grey Coat Issue 9: January 2011 Old Grey speaks at annual prize giving ceremony


At Prize Giving on Thursday, 18th November, there was a warm welcome for former GCH student, Margo Selby. Whilst at school Margo was noted for her participation in drama productions and for acting on television in "Grange Hill". Margo's most recent television appearance was in March 2010 when she made an hour-long contribution to the BBC2 "Mastercrafts" series in which she taught 3 artists how to weave.


After handing out their books to the 111 individual Prize Winners, Margo recalled an occasion when she was given a woven friendship bracelet by schoolmate Alice. Eager to match Alice's impressive talent and curious about the design skills involved, Margo practised until she had perfected an equally imaginative and intricate model. When Margo handed this to a gobsmacked Alice, she heard the confession that Alice had bought the original bracelet whilst on holiday in Mexico. That however was the start of Margo's interest in weaving.


After completing her sixthform studies, Margo qualified for Chelsea College of Art and Design and then undertook a postgraduate course at the Royal College of Art. After dedicating 5 years to becoming a proficient weaver, Margo started creating her 3-dimensional fabrics which have sold worldwide. Initially Margo worked from home to produce cloth which was exhibited and sold at craft fairs around the country. As the bales of material threatened to engulf her, Margo was offered invaluable help by the Crafts Council. A venue was found and Margo was given expert advice for establishing her studio and gallery which are close to the British Museum. From her own experiences, Margo relayed the message that the young
