Grey Coat 10 More debating delight

As in 2009, one of the opening rounds of the English-Speaking Union's Debating Tournament was held at GCH. On Tuesday, 7th December, members of Debating Society came to look after the 5 visiting schools and to undertake key roles such as time-keeping. The opening motion, "THB the West should be held responsible for the effects of climate change", was proposed by David Saliu and Augusta Riddy from Pimlico Academy and opposed by Philippa James and Lorena Mikl from Queen's Gate School. Clear points and a good attempt at rebuttal were present but Ms Lecky would have expected carbon capture and the western scope for other technological developments to be essential references.

At Walworth's request, the next debate became "THB hosting major sporting events are a drain, not a benefit, to society". This motion was proposed by Abimbola Ekerin and Natasha Garry from Notre Dame School with Basan Gezer and Samuel Okusaga from Walworth School in opposition. Interesting points were made but there was insufficient engagement between the two teams.

The final debate then became "THB religion is better left in the home than brought into school". James Wilkinson and Maciek Kozlowski from Cardinal Vaughan proposed this motion which GCH's Sarah Nwandu and Lucy Burkitt- Gray opposed. Whilst Lucy's strength was her sound interaction with the floor and proposition's points, the members of the Cardinal Vaughan team expressed different interpretations of the motion from each other.

All 3 debates stimulated energetic discussion from the house and this offered the 6 teams material for summing- up. Catherine Kernaghan, the Chair of the Adjudication Panel, conveyed the judges' appreciation of the effort made by all 12 debaters. Her advice was to avoid over-preparation which inhibits the flow of the debate and to think strategically about defining motions and ensuring relevant steps support the argument. Both GCH, judged first, and Pimlico proceed into the next round in 2011.
